Starknet's potential L1 shift for quantum security
StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson floated moving Starknet from layer 2 to layer 1 so the network could control its own security migration and better prepare for quantum computing and AI-driven threats. He warned the quantum threat may be nearer than expected and emphasized cryptographic agility and adoption of appropriate cryptography, noting ZK-STARKs are already in use and an active roadmap toward post-quantum security exists.
Ben-Sasson said Starknet could reach quantum resistance by 2027, in contrast to Ethereum’s target of full L1 quantum resistance by the end of 2029 and Bitcoin’s lack of a comparable target. An independent L1 would let Starknet autonomously manage upgrades and support public or private transactions and asset custody.
